Als freiberuflicher Dolmetscher oder Übersetzer beschäftigt man sich nie nur ausschließlich mit Dolmetschen oder Übersetzen. Der Beruf ist sehr vielseitig und erfordert von uns jeden Tag neben den eigentlichen Fachkenntnissen und Soft Skills auch solide Kenntnisse in Kommunikation, Marketing, Design, Buchhaltung, Führung, Prozessgestaltung und vieles mehr. Diese Bereiche haben mit Sprachwissenschaften nicht viel Gemeinsames, sind aber für unsere Tätigkeit unabdingbar. Außerdem definieren viele Kollegen für sich bewusst noch weitere Geschäftsfelder, wie Organisation von Veranstaltungen, Lektorat, Bereitstellung von Dolmetscherteams usw. Oft kommt bei Sprachmittlern auch ein Sprachunterricht in Frage.

Eigene Muttersprache oder eine Fremdsprache

Man kann als studierter Dolmetscher oder Übersetzer entweder seine Muttersprache oder eine Fremdsprache unterrichten, oder auch beides. Weiterhin befasst man sich mit Sprachen, nur die Zielsetzung und dementsprechend die Methoden und Mitteln sind dabei anders.

Während wir beim Übersetzen oder Dolmetschen etwas Eigenes kreieren (der Begriff Transkreation ist nicht ohne Grund entstanden), also ein Produkt liefern, ist die Aufgabe im Sprachunterricht, Sprachkenntnisse zu vermitteln. Was das Ganze etwas leichter macht, ist die Tatsache, dass wir die Sprachen selbst gelernt haben. Jeder von uns hatte für sich ein Lernsystem erarbeitet und kontinuierlich im Lernprozess angewendet.

Ich habe über 10 Jahre neben Übersetzen und Dolmetschen unterrichtet. Das war Russisch, Deutsch als Fremdsprache, Englisch, Business Englisch, Französisch, Latein und sogar Mathe. Das Schwerste war für mich nicht Mathe, wie die Kollegen denken mögen, sondern meine eigene Muttersprache, Russisch.

Russisch als Firmenkurs

Firmenkurse gehören zu der Erwachsenenbildung. Als Lehrer hat man hier den Vorteil, dass die Schüler meistens ergebnisorientiert und sehr motiviert sind. Sie wissen, wofür sie es brauchen und sind dem Leistungs- und Zeitdruck gewohnt. In meinem Fall musste ich einem Topmanager eines amerikanischen Unternehmens der Automobilbranche Russisch beibringen. Ok, ein Lehrbuch für Anfänger sollte erstmal reichen, schließlich ist es ja meine Muttersprache, dachte ich.

Aber dann kam was Unerwartetes. Das Alphabet an sich (Druckschrift und Schreibschrift), was schon eine Herausforderung ist, hat der pfiffige Topmanager schnell gelernt. Was mich dabei gewundert hat, die Logik und Assoziationen, mit denen er sich die Buchstaben gemerkt hatte. Ein „D“ war für ihn ein Dach mit Füßen, ein „L“ das Dach ohne Füße usw. Der Manager war auch viel in Russland unterwegs und konnte sein Vokabular ziemlich schnell aufbauen. Manches kam von ihm sogar akzentfrei und alles machte sehr viel Spaß. Irgendwann kamen aber die Fragen, bei denen ich überlegen musste.

Und das finde ich schwierig beim Unterrichten der eigenen Muttersprache. Die Fragen stellen wir uns nämlich nie, wir fragen uns nicht, welches Geschlecht das Wort „Buch“ hat. Im Russischen ist es nämlich weiblich. Da musste ich schmunzeln, als der Manager dem russischen weiblichen Buch die neutralen Endungen angehängt hat. Klar, es ist in seiner Sprache DAS Buch. Dazu kommt noch, dass die russische Sprache sehr reich an allen möglichen Ausnahmen ist. Die Grammatik ist auch nicht so systematisch aufgebaut wie die deutsche.

Fremdsprachenunterricht

Eine ganz andere Sache ist es, wenn man eine Fremdsprache unterrichtet.

Bei mir war das Business English und Deutsch als Fremdsprache.

Beides habe ich selbst als Fremdsprache gelernt, deswegen war es um Einiges einfacher, die beiden Fächer zu unterrichten. Die Kursteilnehmer hatten oft die gleichen Fragen oder Herausforderungen, mit denen ich selbst konfrontiert hatte. Da konnte man wunderbar die eigene Erfahrung nutzen. Vorteilhaft ist natürlich, wenn man eine höhere Stufe unterrichtet, weil man da selber unheimlich viel lernt, nicht nur was die Sprache angeht, sondern auch mit Menschen zu arbeiten, auf deren Bedürfnisse eingehen, deren Sprachbarriere wegnehmen und anderes.

Wenn man Deutsch als Fremdsprache unterrichten möchte, empfiehlt es sich, eine Zulassung vom BAMF zu beantragen. Aufgrund der heutigen politischen Entwicklung sind die DaF-Lehrer besonders gefragt. Für uns ist es eine Möglichkeit, erfolgreich einer gelungenen Integration von den Mitbürgern mit Migrationshintergründen beizutragen. Dabei geht es um Integrationskurse, Alphabetisierungskurse, Deutsch für den Beruf usw., in denen nicht nur die deutsche Sprache vermittelt wird, sondern auch die Kultur, Sitten und Bräuche.

Ich kann den Kollegen, die nur am Anfang in ihrem Beruf stehen, nur empfehlen, ihren Dienstleistungsbereich durch die Sprachkurse zu erweitern, wenn es die Rahmenbedingungen zulassen. Neben dem finanziellen Vorteil gibt es auch einen geistigen Gewinn. Man lernt die Sprache, unser wichtigstes Arbeitsmaterial, von einer ganz anderen Perspektive und bereichert sich mit Kenntnissen in vielen anderen Gebieten.
